76What is Whittling Anyway?
Whittling is the practice of shaping raw wood into interesting shapes using a whittling knife. It has been practiced throughout history to create tools, Art or just a great way to relax. Usually Basswood, Balsa or some other type of soft wood is preferred for whittling. Hardwood is more difficult to shape and requires more specialized blades although it can be more desirable if certain types woodgrain characteristics are desired.

So who's Whittling these days?
Usually associated with the American south whittling is also a traditional sport in the Basque region of Europe. The practice of whittling was once wide spread throughout the United States. Becoming very popular as a pastime in the 19th century today it is generally practiced by craftsmen, traditionalist and survivalists. Whittling is also still used as a vehicle to teach young Boy Scouts the attributes of knife safety.
What do I need to Get Started?
In reality all you need to get started down the path of whittling is a unique piece of wood, a little free time, a great whittling knife and a little imagination. Here are a couple of tips to get you off to a good start.
1. Be sure you have a good understanding of how to handle a knife safely.
2. Begin practicing with soft types of wood. Balsa, Basswood or pine would be preferred for beginners.
3. Choose a good quality whittling knife. You will also need a sharpening stone and have an understanding of how to properly sharpen your new knife.
4. Once you have an idea of what you want to make begin by removing small amounts of wood with each stroke. Check yourself regularly to insure your staying on track with what you have visualized.

Heres a list of simple things you can use your whittling knife to make.
1. This fall when your sitting out by the fire why not pull out your new whittling knife to sharpen some marshmallow sticks for the kids.
2. Next time your camping and lose a tent stake just pull out your trusty whittling knife and sharpen up a new one out of any old stick.
3. Make a sliding whistle out of a poplar branch. My dad taught me how to do this as a kid and it is allot of fun.
4. Make your own walking stick and give it some personal flare.
